Annual Audubon Bird Walk

Date:          June 3, 2018
Time:         7:30am to 9:30am
Location:  The Grounds at Steepletop

Calling All Bird our annual early-season event

Millay inspired many people with her nature poetry.  She especially loved birds and kept a detailed account of the comings and goings of them at Steepletop in a little bird guide book. This passion inspired the charming memoir of her life, Indigo Bunting, by Vincent Sheean, published in 1951.

To honor Millay’s legacy, we have once again asked Larry Federman, of the Audubon Society, to conduct a bird walk here at Steepletop.  Over the past four years this event is a favorite of Steepletop visitors. We hope to inspire those who partake in this event to learn more about our bird friends and to help protect the wildlife and the magnificent habitat that surrounds us.

Please join us. Bring your binoculars and hiking attire. We will gather at the Visitors Center at Tamarack Cottage by 7:15 am for this adventure.  In case of rain, event will be rescheduled. Cancellations will be posted on our website EVENTS page and our Facebook page.

This event last year was a highlight of the season. Don't miss it.

Fee: $10

For those who wish to take a tour of Millay's home afterwards, a 10:00am tour will be offered at a special price of $12.

In the gardens of Meg and Bill Stratton’s elegant 1845 Greek Revival home at 5178 Route 7 in the heart of Spencertown, new friends meet and old ones greet at this festive kick-off to the summer season. Friends and neighbors paired with delicious food and libations, all served up in a bucolic setting. That is the recipe for the annual Twilight in the Garden Party on Friday, June 15. Cocktails, sparkling beverages, hors d’oeuvres and a scrumptious light supper are served. Tickets are now available.

Hidden Gardens Tour – June 16, 10:00am-4:00pm

This year our self-guided garden tour on June 16 from 10:00am to 4:00pm will feature a collection of six private gardens located in Red Rock, New Concord and Spencertown. Back on the tour this year by popular demand, we also include the gardens at Steepletop, the home of 20th century American poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. The tour will take place rain or shine. Tickets now available.

Garden Market on the Green – June 16, 10:00am-3:00pm

This lovely outdoor marketplace will be held on the Spencertown Village Green across the street from the Academy on June 16. This year’s market will showcase more than twenty vendors offering plants, home and garden furnishings, birdhouses, antiques, garden books, and expert garden advice. Also, shoppers will find bargains on choice garden items and accessories at the Academy’s White Elephant Booth. Food options include breakfast sandwiches, grilled burgers, and hot dogs prepared by the Spencertown Volunteer Fire Company, Micosta food truck serving juices, fruit salad and breakfast crepes in the morning and vegetable quesadillas for the lunch crowd, and ice cream sundaes served by Spencertown Academy volunteers. The aim of the market is to offer the rare and the unexpected at affordable prices. Admission is free and a portion of all sales benefit the Academy.
